3 lawyers of BJD legal front expelled from HC bar

Cuttack: Odisha High Court Bar Association today expelled three of its members on charges of trying to divide the lawyers’ unity and create hurdle in the ongoing lawyers’ strike.

They are BJD legal front convener Milan Kanungo, advisor Asim Amitav Das, former vice president of the bar Bansidhar Satpathy. Besides, the Bar also served show cause notice on Chairman of the Odisha State Bar Council Tahali Charan Mohanty, HC Bar president Srikant Nayak said.

The action came after they, all BJD Legal Front members, tried to resume court proceedings by withdrawing support from the striking advocates.

Earlier on October 29, BJD Legal Front members were trying to storm into the court premises even as advocates affiliated to the Orissa High Court Bar Association (OHCBA) barricaded the gates to prevent their entry.

The High Court bar has accused the ruling Biju Janata Dal of creating a divide in lawyer unity by asking its affiliate, the BJD Legal Front, to withdraw from the agitation.

On the other hand, the Bar association has decided to continue its cease-work agitation till November 9, the day which has been set as the deadline for investigating officer to complete the inquiry into alleged attack on a lawyer by police personnel. The court would hear the case on the same day.

The association will decide further course of action after observing the verdict of the court.
