5 killed as speeding truck runs over school students in Bhadrak; CM announces ex-gratia

Bhadrak: In a heart rending incident, five school students including three girls were killed a speeding truck mowed down them on NH 16 near Ranital in Bhadrak district today.

Four of them died on the spot while another student succumbed to injuries at Bhadrak district headquarters hospital. Four others are undergoing treatment in a critical condition.

The deceased have been identified as Kalpana Jena, Sweta Sahoo, Satyabrat Sahoo, Sukant Barik, Priyambada Mohanty. All were studying in class IX.

The unfortunate incident occurred at around 4.15 pm when the students were returning from school to home. A speeding truck ran over them from behind leaving four of them dead on the spot and five others injured critically.

Meanwhile, tension ran high as hundreds of locals gathered there and blocked road after setting ablaze the truck. The driver is absconding. Locals said the driver was in an inebriated condition and was driving carelessly. The truck was moving towards Bhadrak town from Balasore.

Locals alleged that the traffic rules are violated in the area mostly which led to such incident today.

Bhadrak rural police IIC along with four other officials rushed to the spot and discussed with the irate mob. As the situation went beyond control, adequate forces have been called from the district headquarters.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the death of students and announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of deceased and free treatment for the injured.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed deep condolence over the death innocent students and prayed for speed recovery of the injured.
