Malkangiri/Bhubaneswar: In a fierce gun battle between security personnel and Maoists, five rebels including two woman cadre were killed in a forest near Papluru village in Chitrakonda area of Malkangiri district last night.
Informing this, Additional Director General (Operation), RP Koche said a joint team of Odisha Police and the Special Operation Group (SOG) launched a combing operation on a tip-off that armed rebels have camped in the forest near Papluru.
During search operation, the Maoists opened fire indiscriminately at the security personnel to which the security forces retaliated. In the night-long exchange of fire, five Maoists were killed. The security personnel also seized two Insas rifles, one self-loading rifle (SLR) and a 303 rifle from the camp, Koche said.
The ultras killed in the encounter were the members of Kalimela Dalam headed by Randeb who managed to give a slip to the police forces. Randeb is the divisional committee member of the CPI (Maoists).
More BSF and SOG jawans have been mobilised to the area as the gun battle is still on in the forest, he added.
Terming the achievement as one of the best anti-naxal operations, DGP RP Sharma lauded the efforts of security personnel.”This is the most remarkable achievement of Odisha Police. I think, this is so far the best operation of the Odisha Police against the left-wing extremists,” he added.
Some of the slained naxals were carrying reward on their head, DGP said at a press meet. “We are identifying them,” he added.
The entire area has been sealed and police have kept a strict vigil on the border area, Sharma added. Details of the operation can be share once it is over, the DGP said.
