7 ultras killed in 48 hours

Bhubaneswar: Police have claimed to achive a major success in the anti-maoist operation in the naxal dominated areas of the State as seven dreaded ultras were gunned down within a span of 48 hours since Saturday night.

Five of them were killed in a fierce exchange of fire in Sudrukumpa of Kandhamal district while two other were eliminated in a similar operation in Bolangir.

Four Maoists were killed in Sudrukuma forest yesterday and the gun battle was on whole night in which another naxal was killed in the morning. The slain ultra is a member of KKBN division. An INSAS rifle was seized from the spot, ADG (Operation) RP Koche said.

Similarly, two wanted Maoists- Sanjeev and Rakesh, who were carrying a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 4 lakh respectively, were killed in Bolangir on Saturday night.

A cache of ammunition was also seized during the operation.

Out of seven slain Maoists, identity of three has been ascertained while four others’ identity is yet to be established, DGP RP Sharma said.

The combing operation has been intensified in the area. The anti-naxal operation will be more intensified in coming days with coordination with neighboring States, Sharma added.
