Abhijit Ayer granted bail; remand petition of Odisha police rejected by Delhi court

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Hours after the arrest, Abhijit Ayer Mitra accused of making derogatory remarks against Odisha, its art, culture and heritage was granted bail by Saket court in Delhi today.

The court granted him conditional bail till September 28 and asked him to appear before Konark police for interrogation. The court also rejected Odisha petition seeking his remand due to lack of evidence regarding the case.

“He was arrested by Odisha police with the help of Nizamudin police in Delhi, based on a complaint lodged at Konark police station. Two cases have been registered against him at Konark police station in Puri district and Saheed Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar, IG Soumendra Priyadarshi said.

“We will try to prove the allegation made against him,” he added.

His remark against Odisha, Jagannath temple, Konark temple and State MLAs drew sharp criticism from all quarters. Odisha Assembly also raised the matter and members cutting across party lines expressed deep concern and demanded strict punishment for him during a special discussion on a privilege motion moved by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Narasingha Mishra against him.

Later, Speaker formed a House Committee headed by LoP Narasingha Mishra to probe into the matter. The Committee will submit its report on the first of next Assembly session.
