African lion dies due to illness at Nandankanan zoo

Bhubaneswar: Sad news for animal lovers. Nandankanan zoo here today lost an African Lion, which died due to illness while undergoing treatment at zoo veterinary hospital.

The sad news came on the day when the World is observing Lion Day.

The eight-year-old African lion was carried to zoo hospital after authorities spotted blood in the urine of the animal in the morning today.

The veterinary doctors administered saline to the ailing lion. However, the animal did not respond to the treatment and died.

The cause of death has not yet been ascertained. It can only be known after post-mortem, said zoo authorities after contacting the Centre for Wildlife Health, OUAT, to conduct the post-mortem.

The lion was brought to the zoo from Israel in 2015 to increase lion population in Nandankanan.

Now, the zoo has six lions and seven lionesses.
