Anti-Odisha remarks: Scribe Abhijit Iyer apologizes, told to appear before House Committee on Oct 23

Bhubaneswar: The House Committee today issued a notice again to summon journalist Abhijit Iyer over his alleged derogatory remarks against Odisha, its places of worship and the lawmakers even as he apologized for his ‘unpardonable offence’.

“He had confirmed us through a mail that he would appear before the committee at 11 am today. In another mail, he apologized for his statement stating his remark as unpardonable. He admitted his mistake and sought pardon from the Assembly,” said Narasingha Mishra, chairman of the House Committee.

He may not come to Odisha due to cyclonic storm. The Committee did not consider his absence as a disregard to the committee’s direcetive. The panel decided to issue a notice to Iyer-Mitra to appear in person before the House committee in room number 54 of the Odisha Assembly at 11 am on October 23, 2018. The DGP has been asked to inform him regarding the matter, Mishra added.

Iyer Mitra had come to Odisha on September 15 and toured to various places like Puri, Konark and Chilika. Later, he allegedly posted derogatory remarks on social media against Konark temple. He also insulted the State, its culture and tradition and the MLAs.

The matter was raised in Odisha Assembly. Later, Speaker constituted the House committee appointing Mishra as its head and BJD MLAs Debi Prasad Mishra, Pramila Mallick, Arun Sahoo, Sanjay Dasburma and BJP legislature party leader K V Singhdeo as members.

He was arrested by Odisha Police, with help of Delhi Police, on September 20 on the charge of outraging religious sentiments of the people. He was granted interim relief by a Delhi court which later refused to extend the relief.
