Attack on scribes: Congress demands strict law for safety of journalists

Bhubaneswar: Coming down heavily on Odisha government for failing to ensure safety of working journalists, State Congress today demanded a special law for the protection of scribes in State.

At a press meet, PCC media Cell chief Satya Prakash Nayak said the government has set a dangerous trend in Odisha. “Despite job insecurity, the journalists bring the daily happenings to the fore. But, they are being attacked brutally at many places in several cases. There is no strict law for their safety and security,” said Nayak who was also a journalist by profession prior to joining Congress.

The government should bring a special legislation which would stipulate norms of strict punishment for attackers. The punishment should be at par with the punishment given to the attackers of medical professional, he added.

Notably, some working journalists were thrashed by police personnel in Puri while covering ransacking of a petrol pump by a mob yesterday.

At least a hundred locals and some working journalists sustained injuries when police carried out a baton-charge on the agitators to control the situation.

Protesting police atrocities, the journalists across the State are working in the field today wearing black badges as a mark of protest.

Puri Collector and SP condemned the incident. The SP Sarthak Sarangi has ordered a probe into the matter. He also met the scribes who sustained injuries.
