Bharat bandh: Normalcy hit in parts of Odisha

Bhubaneswar/Sambalpur/Rourkela: Normal life has been disrupted in several places across Odisha due to nation-wide strike call given by the Dalit organisations in protest against the alleged dilution of SC\ST Atrocities Act.

The impact of the bandh has been felt mostly in Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Malkangiri, Bhawanipatna and other places of the State. The activists were found picketing at many points including bus stand, railway station and other junctions in Sambalpur and Rourkela.

Activists under the banner of SC, ST, OBC & Minority Joint Action Committee took out a rally near Vani Vihar square in Bhubaneswar supporting the bandh call. Vehicular traffic was halted for quite some time due to the rally.

Almost all business establishments and educational institutions have remained closed due to the bandh in Rourkela. The protesters have staged a road blockade at Bisra square in Rourkela bringing vehicular traffic into a grinding halt.

Similarly, Adibasi Dalit Sena in Sambalpur blocked railway track near Sambalpur station affecting train communication.

The Dalit organisations have called for a countrywide shutdown protesting the Supreme Court ruling on the SC/ST (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) Act.

Punjab which has the highest Dalit population in the country witnessed the bandh most. There is massive security across Punjab.
