Kendrapara: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) which had passed a resolution in Odisha Assembly to provide 33% reservation to women in both Parliament and legislative assemblies, today announced to give such reservation to women in upcoming Lok Sabha election.
BJD supremo and chief minister Naveen Patnaik made the announcement while addressing a gathering member of Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Kendrapara today.
“I would like to announce at Kendrapara, the Karma Bhumi of Lgendary Biju Babu that Odisha will send 33 per cent women to Parliament in the coming election”, Patnaik said in his address.
He further added that such reservation would boost the women empowerment move of State.
He also urged all other regional and national parties to follow the suit for women empowerment.
He said Biju Babu had implemented 33 per cent reservation for women in three tier Panhayati Raj institutions and government jobs in 1990, In 2012, the BJD-government increased it to 50 per cent, the CM pointed out.
On the other hand, BJP down played the announcement saying the move of BJD is a poll plank. “This is Naveen Patnaik’s double-standard poll tactics. He had assured 33% reservation in Lok Sabha and State Assembly. But now why it is only for Lok Sabha?”Patra questioned.
