Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to accept the resignation of former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda.
In a letter to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, leader of BJD Parliamentary party in Lok Sabha Bhartruhari Mahtab stated that as Panda should continue as an MP as ‘per the terms of the tenth schedule of the constitution of India pertaining to anti-defection provisions’ since he resigned from the primary membership of BJD.
“Therefore, I request you to kindly accept his resignation forth-with, since he ceases to be a MP as per the provisions of the constitution and the law”, Mahtab stated through the letter.
Quoting the letter, “Since he has resigned of his own accord, the proceedings for his disqualification under the tenth schedule need not be initiated by our party,” Panda tweeted “Not need not, but cannot. Have some self respect. I did”.
