Bhubaneswar: A day after the BJD announced support for the NDA nominee for the post of Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Harivansh Narayan Singh, a first-term MP from the JD(U), Odisha Congress has criticised the regional party terming the move as an outcome of internal fear for CBI raid.
“BJD has been supporting the BJP for the last four years in fear of CBI action against its corruption. Its claim of maintaining equidistance has been exposed.
“What Niranjan Patnaik is saying has no base. We have supported a like-mined party like the JD (U). We are still maintaining equidistance from BJP and Congress,” BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra said.
BJD had earlier citied that JD(U) and BJD have similar ideological origins emerging from the Jay Prakash Narayan movement. Congress candidate BK Hariprasad was AICC general secretary in-charge of Odisha and during his tenure he had been vitriolic in his statements against BJD.
Yesterday, BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced that his party will support the JDU candidate.
The post of the Deputy Chairperson has been vacant since July 1, following the tenure of Congress leader PJ Kurien from Kerala.
