Bhubaneswar: The traffic square near Chief Minister’s residence was tense after police aborted the rally of BJP Mahila Morcha and scuffled with the saffron activists while they were marching towards Naveen Niwas to meet the CM, demanding justice to Pipili gang-rape and murder victim and ouster of Minister Pradeep Maharathy.
A group of BJP members-led by Mahila Morcha president Pravati Parida marched towards Naveen Niwas with bangles as a mark of protest. They questioned the CM’s silence even after his minister courted a controversy by hailing the accused acquittal in sensational gang rape and murder of a dalit girl of Pipili.
The CM who had promised justice for the victim has remained silent now even after the accused were acquitted, Parida said. Moreover, his minister’s statement is just like robbing salt into wounds, she added.
The women activists had planned to offer bangles to CM in protest against his muteness over acquittal of accused and Maharathy’s controversial statement.
Several leaders of the morcha have been picked up by police when they staged dharna on the road. Many were taken to preventive custody.
