Puri: Normal life at Konark has been severely hit in Konark as the BJP Mahila Morcha is observing a 12-hour bandh in the town, demanding arrest of the main accused in connection with a gangrape of a girl from West Bengal in captivity.
The bandh was being observed even as six persons have been arrested in this connection.
Shops, bazaars, schools and colleges have remained closed while vehicular movement has been disrupted due to the bandh. The bandh which started at 6 am will continue till 6 pm.
The activists of the saffron party’s women wing staged road blockade the town by burning tyres, staging dharna on the roads. Adequate security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order.
Notably, a 25-year-old girl from West Bengal was rescued by Konark police on October 17 from a locked house in a critical condition. After being rescued she alleged that 12 persons gangraped here for 10 days inside a house at Konark Market Complex.
Though the Konark police have arrested some culprits, including hotel staffs, the main accused has not been arrested yet.
She had reportedly told the police that a youth named Subash Behera abducted her and kept her in captivity in the house, where he and several other persons took turns to rape her for 10 days.
The girl is being treated at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, now.
