Chilika tragedy: One more driver arrested

Khurdha: Police today arrested another man in connection with the Chilika boat tragedy claimed six lives including that of four minors.

He is Arjun Behera, assistant driver of the boat. He was arrested Samantrapur. The boat owner Basant Behera was arrested earlier for allegedly flouting boat norms.

The mishap occurred on June 15 when the boat was apparently hit by gusty wind following which it lost balance and capsized. As many as 18 passengers were travelling in boat from Kalijai temple to Balugaon. Six of them including four minors drowned.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the family of deceased and free treatment for the injured.

The Directorate Of Ports & Inland Water Transport was probing the case. It had recently submitted inquiry report to government, holding strong winds responsible for such mishap.

Though there were 20 life jackets in the boat, they were not used. There were also life boy in the 15-seated boat. But, it lost control due to strong winds and capsized, said the report.
