Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday sought intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking cancellation of Centre’s order allowing Andhra Pradesh Government to go ahead with the Polavaram project.
In a letter to Modi, Patnaik urged to give directions to cancel the order given by the Ministry of Forest and Environment for Polavaram project on July 10, 2018 to Andhra Pradesh Government and to stop the construction of the project until all pending issues are resolved.
This was Patnaik’s fourth letter to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention to cancel Centre’s order allowing Andhra Pradesh Government to go ahead with the Polavaram project.
“I am constrained to write this letter to draw your attention and intervention on the magnitude of the consequences that the people of Odisha will have to face viz. The submergence of tribal villages resulting in mass displacement of tribals, the flooding of fertile agricultural land and submergence of large forest area, all of which can be avoided if only an opportunity is given for a final resolution of the dispute pending before the Supreme Court,” said Patnaik.
Patnaik said, “The Polavaram prject can be reformulated as GWDT award without causing large scale submergence in the States of Odisha, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. If the project is allowed to be completed before the resolution of all the pending issues, it will cause permanent injury to the interest of the State of Odisha and its people.”
“It is my earnest request to give directions to cancel the order given by the MoEF and CC for Polavaram project on July 10, 2018 and to stop the construction of the Polavram project until all the pending issues are resolved,” urged Patnaik.
