Kendrapara: Scores of women had a face-off with police while they joined an anti liquor movement by blocking road and trying to demolish two liquor shops at Angulai under Marshaghai block in Kendrapara district today.
The scuffle ensued between the protesters and police while the later resisted the women while they were trying to demolish the shops.
The protesters said that two liquor shops, one country liquor and foreign liquor, at Angulai square have ruined many families in the locality. The shops have become the main reason of family disturbances as people can access to the intoxicants easily, they added.
Despite repeated complaints, the district administration has done precious little to shift the liquor shops from the area, the protesters said.
Being frustrated over the activities of the drunken men, women took to the streets. The agitation will be intensified further in coming days until the shops are shifted, a protester said.
After the scuffle, women staged a peaceful dharna on the road placing a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Apprehending any untoward incident, one platoon of police has been deployed on the spot.
