Customs Dept seizes gold from passenger again at Bhubaneswar airport

Bhubanneswar: Customs Department again seized over 180 gm gold worth around Rs 5 lakh from an air passenger at Biju Patnaik International Airport here on Sunday.

The person who was returning from abroad has been detained and is being interrogated, sources said.

On a tip-off, Air Intelligence Unit officers of the Customs intercepted him soon after he landed at the airport. During frisking of body and luggage, the officials found the gold items which he was carrying illegally with him.

Airport officials said the passenger who brought the precious jewellery items from Bangkok is a resident of New Delhi.

This is the sixth seizure of gold at the city airport this week.

On Saturday, the Customs officials had also seized over 300 gm precious metal worth Rs 9.53 lakh from a passenger returning from Bangkok. He hails from Bengaluru.

The department on Thursday had seized 15 gold bars worth Rs 34.90 lakh from two passengers and on Wednesday seized three gold bars and 143 gold rings worth over Rs 12 lakh from two passengers hailing from Maharashtra
