Dibyang Odisha priest critically burnt during superstitious ritual, video goes viral

Kandhamal: In yet another incident of superstition, a physically handicapped youth priest hung upside down and being burnt during a secret ritual at Mahamayee Temple near Bhagamunda on September 8.

The matter came to light after a video of the Dibyang priest being burnt went viral on social media and police rushed him to Baliguda hospital. He suffered 70 per cent burn injuries.

The Dibyang priest identified as Bhabani Shankar Nanda lost his grip and is about to fall in the fire when he was dragged out by onlookers. By the time he was dragged out, he suffered critical burn injuries. However, he did not go to hospital for treatment and rather preferred to stay in the temple.

Source said he had a belief that if he follows such a ritual, he will be cured of all his physical deformities.

According to reports, Bhabani’s legs were paralysed.

On being informed about the incident, local police rushed to the spot and rushed him to Baliguda hospital.

“I hanged myself on the hearth. Nobody ask me to do so. I did this only to cure my physical deformities,” said Nanda.
