DRC alerts coastal districts as Met warns of heavy rain;OUAT issues advisory

Bhubaneswar: Deputy Relief Commissioner Prabhat Mohapatra today asked coastal district collectors to remain alert in view of Met department’s prediction of heavy rain due to low-pressure area over west-central Bay of Bengal from October 28.

Similarly, Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has issued advisory over the phenomenon. It advised the farmers to spray salt water to prevent the paddy crops from falling down. Agriculture secretary said that standing crops will not be affected as wind speed will remain very low. Pest menace will appear after rain. Farmers should take precaution, he added.

Speaking to media, Bhubaneswar MeT centre director HR Biswas said that a cyclonic circulation which has formed over the west-central part of Bay of Bengal likely to further intensify into a low-pressure in the next 24 hours. Under its influence, more rainfall will occur in the coastal districts from October 28 to 30.

According to a Met bulletin heavy rainfall will occur over the districts of Balesore, Ganjam, Bhadrak, Puri, Kendrapara, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.

The MeT bulletin has advised fishermen not to venture into sea.

People have been advised to take shelter in safe places to avoid any kind of accident during the period.
