Elephant carcass found in Athagarh; poaching suspected

Athagarh: A seven-year-old elephant was found dead near Sabara Taila village in Rajnagar under Athagarh forest division in Cuttack district today.

Though exact reason of its death has not yet been known, forest officials suspected it to be a case of poaching as the bleeding was reported from its face. It is also suspected that poachers might have extracted its tusk forcefully.

The forest department, being informed by the locals, seized the body of the animal and asked the veterinary experts to conduct post-mortem. The reason of the death can be ascertained after the autopsy, forest staff said.

Earlier in August, a sick baby elephant was rescued by the forest officials in Athagarh area. It was died while undergoing treatment at a local veterinary hospital.
