Bhubaneswar: Former Guwahati High Court Chief Justice Ajit Singh has been appointed as the first Lokayukta of Odisha with his name approved by Prof Governor Ganeshi Lal on Saturday.
A seven-member search committee had unanimously finalised Justice Singh’s name at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here on February 12. The Supreme Court had earlier asked the State Government to complete the whole processes of the Lokayukta appointment by March 31.
The office of the Lokayukta will start functioning from April 8, 2019.
It is noteworthy to mention here that Odisha was the first State in the country in passing the Lokayukta Bill in the State Assembly on February 14, 2014. Later, the Bill was approved by the President. However, the State Government was yet to appoint a Lokayukta since then.
The Lokayukta will conduct investigations into allegations of corruption against Government officers, Ministers and political leaders, according to reports.
