Bhubaneswar: Arup Patnaik, a 1979 batch IPS officer who has also served as the Mumbai Police Commissioner, today joined the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
He joined the regional party in the presence of party chief and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and many senior party leaders at Naveen Niwas here.
Welcoming Patnaik to the party fold, the CM said Arup Patnaik does not need any introduction and his joining will strengthen the party organisation.
The 63-year-old Patnaik was the 36th Police Commissioner of Mumbai. He is the first and only Odia IPS officer to hold the post of Police Commissioner of Mumbai.
He retired on September 30, 2015, following 36 years in service, during which he also received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2003.
He is also a recipient of Indian Police Medal for meritorious service in 1994. He was the first and only Odia to hold the post of Police Commissioner of Mumbai. Patnaik was born on September 8, 1955 in Bhubaneswar. He attended Mayo College, Ajmer on scholarship.
