Bhubaneswar: As many as 8,000 youths were allegedly duped of Rs 1 crore by a Kalahandi-based firm consisting of some teachers and brokers on the pretext of providing them jobs in Vivekananda Educational Trust in the district.
The gang is operational in and around the Kalahandi district. In Kalahandi district alone, people of 13 panchayats have been victimised by the gang. These startling facts were revealed after the victims reported the matter to the local media persons and civil society organisations.
Meanwhile, the victims along with the locals demanded immediate police action and recovery of money from the gang.
Sources said the gang members used to approach unemployed youths and introduce them to the administrative officials of the Vivekananda Educational Trust. They used take money from the applicants after flaunting their clout.
The gang had duped nearly 8,000 people of 13 gram panchayats in Kalahandi district of at least Rs 1 crore ( Rs 12,500 per person) in the name of providing jobs of teachers and clerks to them.
The victims alleged that the gang members used to threaten the applicants if they demanded their money back.
