Bhubaneswar: Gangster Raja Acharya alias Sandip on Wednesday walked out of the jail here. He was granted conditional bail by the Orissa High Court in a kidnapping-cum-extortion case registered against him in 2010.
The single bench of the High Court comprising Justice JP Das issued the bail petition in the case of abduction of an employee of Jyoti Motors with an intention of extortion.
Acharya was released on a deposit of two sureties of Rs 50,000 each besides appearing before Lingaraj police station once in a week.
He has also been issued a strict directive to stay away from any kind of criminal or offensive activities. However, though the Commissionerate police has decided to appeal to the High Court to cancel the bail, but nothing tangible has happened.
Though the Supreme Court in March last year had granted bail to gangster Sandeep alias Raja Acharya after he was sentenced to life for killing judo coach Biranchi Das, but he could not be released from jail due to the abduction case registered in 2010 against him at Lingaraj police station.
Lingaraj police had registered the case against Acharya for allegedly making a threat call from the jail to an automobile showroom dealer for extortion money.
The history-sheeter was convicted in the judo coach Biranchi Das murder case in December 2010 and has since been cooling his heels in the Jharpada Special Jail here. He was awarded a four-year jail term by a trial court here in October 2011 for abducting Arun Mantri, brother of Ollywood actress Bidusmita, in April 2008. Acharya was also sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by a trial court here in March 2012 for sending threat SMS to album actress Leslie Tripathy.
Meanwhile, Gitanjali Das, the wife of deceased Biranchi Das sought more police protection after the HC granted bail to the gangster.
