Five get lifer in minor girl gang rape case in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: The special POCSO court awarded life imprisonment for five accused in connection with the gang rape of minor girl in Sasan police station area in the district. While pronouncing the verdict, POCSO judge Udaybhanu Jena also directed the accused to pay fine of Rs 50,000 each for committing such crime.

The accused are Afzal Raja, Tinu sahu, Hadu banchabiha, Asirbad behera, Abhilas panchabiha. A minor boy was also involved in the crime, judge said while pronouncing the verdict.

The hearing began at around 7am on Saturday and continued till 8 pm.

After a 13-hour long hearing, the judge pronounced the verdict after taking cognizance of 21 witnesses including judicial magistrate first class Biswakalpita Mohanty who had recorded the statement of the survivor under section 164 of crpc.

The court held all accused guilty and announced the quantum of punishment at 10pm.

Public prosecutor Artatrana Mishra argued on behalf of government while advocate Pritiranjan Patnaik and Satya Narayan Bahidar fought the case on behalf of accused.
