Bhubaneswar: Bringing glory for the country, four women hockey players of the state Sunita Lakra, Namita Toppo, Deep Grace Ekka and Lilima Minz have been selected in the Indian Women’s Hockey squad for the upcoming series against Korea.
The five match series is slated to be held at Jinchun National Athletic Centre in South Korea.
Ace striker Rani Rampal will lead the team while defender Odisha’s Sunita Lakra have been named as vice-captain for the tour.
Namita Toppo and Lilima Minz will play in the midfield while Deep Grace Ekka will be a part of the defence line-up.
The Korea Tour will be Indian Team’s first event after their historic Asia Cup success where they beat China 5-4 in a penalty shootout to lift the title in November last year.
Women’s team chief coach Harendra Singh said “Doing well in the season’s first event is always important to gain confidence and keep the momentum for the rest of the year. Korea Tour will also help us analyse the areas that requires improvement ahead of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.”
“It is good to see experienced players Deepika and Poonam overcome injuries and return to the squad. We have a good mix of experienced players who will play an important role of guiding some of the youngsters in the team,” said Singh.
