Huge properties seized from naxals, says SIT vice chairman

Cuttack: Huge amount of black money and properties have been recovered from the Maoists. The sources of the money are being investigated, said Arijit Pasayat, vice-chairman of SIT on black money after concluding a review meeting today.

“Huge unaccounted properties have been seized from Maoist leaders in Odisha. It is evident from the seizure that Maoists are taking forward their criminal activities utilising these black money. Such seizure is first incident in the country,” Justice Pasayat told reporters.

At the meeting held at his residence in Cuttack, the retired Supreme Court justice also reviewed some high-profile cases related to tax evasion in mining business and money laundering probe cases including those related to bank frauds. Black money in tender and naxal outfit  was also a subject in the meeting.

Odisha DGP R.P Sharma, Odisha Crime Branch ADG Santosh Upadhyay, Odisha Vigilance Director Debashis Panigrahi, Director of Revenue Intelligence D.P. Das, Enforcement Directorate (ED) Special Director Yogesh Gupta, ED Special Director D.K. Gupta, ED Joint Director Madhab Mishra, CBI SP Pramod Manjhi, SEBI General Manager Santosh Sharma, Central Economic Intelligence Bureau Director P.K. Mishra, Odisha Crime Branch Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Income Tax, Mines officials and all department heads attended the meeting.

The Supreme Court had ordered the Union government to constitute a SIT to probe into the black money issues.

Sources said that the panel is likely to submit a fresh report to the Supreme Court soon.
