Bhubaneswar: The slogan of Commissionerate Police-We care, We dare- is again questioned after a young journalist was attacked allegedly by a mob in a cinema hall in Bhubaneswar on the Republic Day.
What was wrong with the scribe named Kapilendra Pradhan, a correspondent of Odia daily Prameya is that he opposed the vulgar language and uproar of a group of students in the theatre. The attackers are reportedly the students of Utkal University and belong to Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD).
Kapilendra and a fellow journalist was watching movie inside the hall. The unruly mob was shouting with vulgar and unparliamentarily languages, creating chaos in the theatre. Though others feared to oppose the act, Kapilendra moved forward and requested them to enjoy the movie instead of creating noise and disturbing others. Irked, they collectively hurled blows and kicks at Pradhan leaving him critically injured.
What is more surprising is that the incident took place a few metres away from the Saheed Nagar police station. Pradhan lodged a complaint with police immediately and brought the matter to the notice of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anup Sahoo. However, police are yet to act promptly as the attackers have links to ruling party, Pradhan said.
The journalist body condemned the act and decided to stage a sit-in if the culprits are not booked at the earliest.
