Lawyers’ Mahabandh’ hits normal life in western Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Normal life has been severely hit the western Odisha districts like Sambalpur, Deogarh and Jharsuguda as the Central Action Committee (CAC) of lawyers’ associations has begun holding a two-day ‘Mahabandh’ (massive stir) since 6 am this morning, demanding establishment of a permanent High Court bench in the region.

Schools, colleges, shops and other business institutions have remained closed in many parts of the western Odisha. Similarly, vehicular movement has been disrupted as activists have blocked roads at different places. Rail services have also been hit due to the Rail Roko staged during the period.

The strike will continue to be held on Friday also.

Notably, lawyers’ cease-work agitation has almost paralysed the judicial delivery system in the region since September 5. The issue had also rocked the State Assembly recently. Still, lawyers have not been assured of establishment of a permanent High Court Bench in the region. Thus, the CAC called for a 48-hour Mahabandh

General public and all political parties and social organisations have extended their support to the lawyers’ agitation.
