Bhubaneswar: Proceedings in Odisha Assembly was disrupted repeatedly following heavy noise by the Opposition Congress and BJP demanding a debate on Nilagiri minor girl rape case.
Unable to run the House, Speaker Pradeep Amat adjourned it till 11.30 and again till 3pm as the pandemonium continued.
Soon after the House assembled for the day, Leader of Opposition Narasingh Mishra demanded cancellation of question hour and moved a special motion to discuss the rape case of Nilagiri. As the demand of Mishra was left unheard, Congress members created noise in the well of the House.
BJP too demanded same discussion, but Speaker ignored it.
“I wrote to the Speaker before the House assembled. I urged him to cancel the question hour and allow the House to discuss on a sensitive issue like the rape of a minor girl in Nilagiri. But, Speaker ignored my appeal,” Mishra said.
BJP MLA Rabi Naik questioned why the government which claimed to have been giving respect to women is taking laid back attitude for a discussion on something very sensitive.
BJD legislator Sameer Das said no culprit of any case is spared under Naveen Patnaik government. The accused in Nilagiri case will be taken to task very soon. But, Opposition parties disrupted the Assembly proceeding with a political motive, he added.
Meanwhile, Remuna MLA Govind Chandra Das alleged that the rape accused is a relative of Nilagiri MLA Sukant Nayak.
However, Nayak rubbished the allegation saying that he only got to know about the incident from media. The accused must be punished, he said.
A minor girl of Hatadihi was allegedly raped by a neighbouring youth on Saturday. The youth lured her by offering chocolate and took her to a room where he allegedly raped her.
