Nine-year-old sacrificed by kin as witchcraft ritual

Bolangir: Police today arrested two persons for allegedly sacrificing their nine-year-old relative named Ghanasyam Rana, whose headless body was found from Undei river bed at Sundhimunda under Sindhekela police station in Bolangir district on October 16.

The two accused identified as Kunja Rana and Sobhaban Rana are the uncle and brother of the boy respectively in distance relation.

Kunja and Sobhaban who were practicing sorcery, beheaded the boy in a bid to attain superpower, police confirmed.

Police said Sobhaban had enacted a drama to give a twist to the case, a day after body of the minor boy was recovered. Through some of his supports, he informed the police that he has been kidnapped while hiding himself in a local forest. Police rescued him successfully and acquired vital clues from him on the sensitive case after interrogation.

On the basis of his statement, police arrested Kunja and extracted more information regarding their plan to execute the crime.

Ghanasyam had gone missing since October 13. After a day-long search family members failed to trace him and lodged a missing complaint with police on October 14. The police also launched a search operation in the nearby areas and quizzed some local sorcerers suspecting human sacrifice.

However, his headless body was found on the river bed today and family members identified him.

Superstition like black magic and sorcery practice are prevalent in the area that raised apprehension of child sacrifice.
