Odisha Assembly adjourned till 3 pm amid opposition uproar over delay in Lokayukta appointment

Bhubaneswar: Noisy scenes were witnessed in the Assembly on Monday as the opposition Congress members created a ruckus over the delay on the part of the State Government in appointing Lokayukta.

Except the Question Hour, nno business could be transacted in the House as the Congress members rushed to the well shouting slogans. The house could not run even for a minute after the Question Hour as the Speaker adjourned it first till 12.30 pm and later till 3 pm.

The House was first adjourned till 12.30 pm and latter extended till 3 pm after the situation did not improve.

Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat first adjourned the House from 11.43 to 12.30 pm on its fifth working day as Opposition Congress members kept up demanding appointment of Lokayukta at the earliest. When the House reassembled at 12.30 pm, Congress members also raised a din forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House again till 3 pm.

Soon after the Question Hour ended, Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra raised the Lokayutka issue and slammed the BJD Government for not appointing a Lokayukta for the last four years since the death of Lokpal PK Patra in 2013 while the old Odisha Lokpal and Lokayukta Act is still in force.

The State Government, though boasted of having passed the State Lokayukta Act first in country, has too failed to appoint a Lokayukta when three years have already been passed since the President gave his nod to the new Act in 2015.

“I demand that the Speaker give a ruling asking the Chief Minister inform the House as to when his Government will appoint the Lokayukta,” insisted Mishra.

As the Speaker didn’t respond, Congress members trouped into the Well of the House and shouted slogans insisting on the demand. BJP members were also seen supporting them standing at their respective seats.

Unable to run the House, Speaker Amat first adjourned the House till 12.30 pm and later suspended the proceedings till 3 pm.
