Bhubaneswar: Senior IAS officer Vinod Kumar, who was convicted in a corruption case pertaining to the Odisha Rural Housing Development Corporation (ORHDC), was sentenced to three years imprisonment by a special vigilance court in Bhubaneswar.
He was sent to Jharpada jail after his bail petition was rejected by the court.
Another convict in the case, Purnachandra Das was also sentenced to three years in jail.
The quantum of punishment was pronounced after the senior bureaucrat surrendered before the court today. The vigilance could not arrest him even as NBW was slapped against him as Orissa High Court had granted him interim relif. The high Court had asked the IAS officer and others convicted in the case to surrender in the court positively on August 10.
Yesterday, the Vigilance Court also sentenced the two former employees of ORHDC- Pradip Rout (accounts officer) and Chitta Mallick (accountant)- to three years in jail each in connection with financial irregularities in the Corporation.
The Vigilance Court had last month found the five, including the IAS officer, guilty and convicted them in the a corruption case.
However, before the lower court could decide the quantum of punishment to the convicted officers, Vinod Kumar had approached the High Court and obtained relief in which the High Court had restrained the Vigilance officials from arresting him by the strength of the NBW that was issued by the Vigilance Court.
During his tenure as Managing Director of ORHDC, Vinod Kumar had unscrupulously granted loans to builders and contractors without obtaining adequate collateral security and proper scrutiny. Besides, no follow-up action was also taken by the Corporation to recover the loans.
