Puri situation under control, says DGP

Puri/Cuttack: Even as large scale damage to public properties was reported in Puri during a bandh today, the situation brought under control within two- three hours after the violence, said DGP RP Sharma.

He said many government properties were damaged during the bandh as protesters resorted to vandalism. The office of temple administration was ransacked. Minister Maheswar Mohanty’s house was also vandalized by the agitators, Sharma added.

The protesters also torched the shed and dismantled the barricades in front of the temple. The temple outpost was also affected and many properties were lost. The police conducted flag-march on Bada Danda and discussed with the protesters. IG Soumendra Priyadarshi is closely monitoring the situation. The Collector and SP have met the protesters and brought the situation under control.

Adequate police forces have been deployed at strategic locations in the town. The police is keeping close watch on the situation, Sharma said.

Complaints have been lodged against protesters who indulged in violence and vandalism. Action will be taken accordingly, the DGP maintained.
