Rules for Gandhi memorial can’t be applicable for Srimandir: Puri Sankaracharya

Puri: Reacting sharply on Supreme Court’s suggestion for entry of non-Hindus into Sri Jagannath temple in Puri, Sankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati today said indirectly that Srimandir is not a secular place and can’t be compared with any other religious places.

The rules applied for Gandhiji’s memorial cannot be applicable for Puri temple, he said. Remembering US President’s visit to Rajghat, the Puri seer said sniffer dogs had inspected the memorial before his visit. If the same rules are applied in case of Srimandir, similar situation may arise, he added.

He further maintained that rituals of the Hindu temple are conducted as per tradition and system. The case handled by Justice Adarsh Goel was also a judge in Orissa High Court. During his tenure in Odisha, he had also ordered that Sankaracharya’s decision in Puri temple affairs is final and his order on religious matter will always remain in force, the seer pointed out.

Saraswati further stated that the court’s order and suggestion are being examined by the legal experts. He will have a meeting with the Puri temple management after Rath Yatra.
