Bhubaneswar: The Directorate Of Ports & Inland Water Transport today submitted inquiry report on Chilika boat tragedy, holding strong winds responsible for such mishap.
Though there were 20 life jackets in the boat, they were not used. There were also life boy in the 15-seated boat. But, the but lost control due to strong winds and capsized, said Transport Secretary G. Srinivas quoting the inquiry report.
The boat mishap that took place on last Saturday claimed six lives including that of four minors.
The mishap occurred when the boat was apparently hit by gusty wind following which it lost balance and capsized. As many as 18 passengers were travelling in boat from Kalijai temple to Balugaon. Six of them including four minors drowned.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the family of deceased and free treatment for the injured.
The boat driver was also arrested for allegedly flouting boat norms.
