Three-day police remand of Sushant, Ranjita ends

Cuttack: Commissionerate Police conducted a marathon interrogation of suspended BJD corporator of ward number 7 of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) Ranjita Biswal and Sushant Dhalasamant, the elder of the gangster siblings D-brothers during the three-day remand ended today.

The duo was taken on remand by the police on March 13 in connection with the firing of a contractor Bijay Pal on February 23, on Thursday.

Initially Ranjita was quizzed by the police at the Mahila Police Station here for three hours. Later, she was taken to the Sadar police station and was grilled together with Sushant on the last day of the remand period.

The police tried to elicit information from the two regarding the reason behind the murderous attempt on Pal. The police also questioned Ranjita and Sushant whether any other person were in their target.

Meanwhile, basing on statement of Sushant during the interrogation police have arrested the close aide of D-brothers, Asish Behera alias Karnal on charges of managing tender fixing, extortion and other crimes of the gangster brothers.

Earlier on March 13, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (Rural) allowed the police to take Ranjita and Sushant on remand. Later in the evening, police brought Dhalasamant from Jharpada jail in Bhubaneswar and Biswal was brought from Choudwar jail here.

Sushant was arrested in 2016 along with his younger brother Sushil on several charges.

Cuttack city DCP Akhileswar Singh had earlier claimed that Dhalasamant had hatched a plan in jail to eliminate at least four persons, including some policemen, in the city.

Singh also claimed she had provided three imported pistols and 60 live bullets to history-sheeter Mrutunjay Nayak to execute the murders. For abetting crimes, Biswal was arrested from her house here at Deulasahi on March 7.
