Transgender Meera joins BJD, likely to contest from Begunia Assembly segment

Bhubaneswar: Transgender leader and social worker Meera Parida joined Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Sunday.

The All Odisha Kinnar Mahasangha president and founding member of SAKHA, Parida joined the party along with a large number of supporters in the presence of party supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Naveen Niwas here.

Parida hails from Gadatara village under Begunia block in Khurda district. Sources said regional party may field Pardia as its nominee for Begunia Assembly segment.

Notably, Kajal Nayak, a transgender will be contesting from Korei Assembly constituency in Jajpur district as a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate. This is the first time in political history of Odisha that members from third gender category are being included in active politics.

In 2017, Meera along with members of the third gender community had petitioned the State Election Commission for making provisions allowing them to contest elections.
