Triple murder: Gunupur court commutes death penalty for nine

Rayagada: In a landmark verdict, Additional District and Sessions Court in Gunupur today awarded death sentence to nine persons convicted of killing three persons of a family in Kitum village under Gunupur block of Rayagada district in 2016.

“Taking cognisance of all evidence and witnesses, Gunupur ADJ Suevendu kumar Pati pronounced the verdict by awarding death sentence to nine persons in the case,” public prosecutor Krushnachandra Senapati said.

In September 2016, Asin Sambar, wife Ambei and daughter Asamani was brutally killed by the villagers on the suspicion of practising witchcraft.

The trio was tied to a pole in a cowshed for a night and injected them with pesticides in the morning. When they fell unconscious, villagers had buried them alive.A day after, they dug them out and set the bodies on fire in a bid to destroy evidence.

Police had arrested 10 persons including a minor boy in connection with the case.
