Bhubaneswar: Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel walked into controversy after he made pictures of Lingaraj temple viral on his twitter page.
The minister posted his pictures during worship inside the sanctum sanctorum of the 11th century shrine while greeting people of Odisha on Utkal Dibas. Photos of the sanctum sanctorum and temple premises were posted on his micro blogging site.
He had visited the historical temple last year during his Odisha tour. However, it is not known who had clicked the pictures in the ‘no camera zone’.
The BJP, meanwhile, passed the buck on the temple authorities. “The temple priests or any officials had not apprised him about the restriction. So, it has happened inadvertently. We apologise for such inadvertent mistake,” BJP state general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan said.
On the other hand, Congress leader Suresh Routray demanded Goel’s ouster from Union Cabinet. “The Prime Minister should remove him from his Cabinet as he hurt the religious sentiment of Odia people. Otherwise he should resign,”Routray said demanding apology from the minister.
Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon had also landed in a similar controversy last month after a video clip of her shooting for a commercial on the temple premises went viral on the social media. Later, she apologised saying that she was not aware of the restriction.
As per rule, the mobile phones and videos are strictly prohibited on Lingaraj temple premises.
