Bhubaneswar: The year 2017 has recorded a surge in crime rates in Odisha. It was confirmed from the White Paper 2017 the copy of which was distributed by the Home department among the members in Assembly today.
The White Paper stated that 1.3866 lakh criminal cases were registered in 2017 in Odisha. Out of which 87,287 cases were registered under various sections of Indian Penal code. Out of total 1.3866 cognizable offences, charge-sheets were filed in 7045 cases.
Similarly, 1267 murder cases were filed out of which charge-sheets were produced in court only in 643 cases.
Police is able to charge-sheet the accused in 231 dacoity cases out of total 534 cases registered at various police stations in 2017. As many as 1691 dacoits including 72 inter-State gang members were arrested in 2017. Similarly, weapons and explosive material were seized in 60 such cases. Theft properties worth over Rs 3.28 crore were recovered.
The White Paper also clarified that 2048 loot cases and 2221 rape cases were registered in State in 2017. The investigating agencies are able to submit charge-sheet in 917 loot cases and 1401 rape cases, it further read.
