In a major regional medical breakthrough, the surgical team at IMS and SUM Hospital (Campus-3), Berhampur, successfully removed a malignant tumor from the brain of a 60-year-old woman. This marks the first time such a high-tech neurosurgery has been performed locally in South Odisha.

The patient, Saraswati Behera, was admitted with severe headaches and left-sided weakness. An MRI revealed a massive tumor located deep at the base of the brain, perilously close to delicate nerves controlling hearing and facial movement.

Led by Associate Professor Dr. Pratya Kumar Jagdeb (Neurosurgery) and Dr. Pratyush Kumar Mishra (Neuro-Anaesthesiology), the team utilized cutting-edge technology to navigate the high-risk zone. They used a high-precision neurosurgical microscope alongside a CUSA (Cavetron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator), which fragmentation-targets the tumor using ultrasonic frequencies while completely preserving healthy brain tissue and critical nerves.

Director Deb Prasad Dash stated this achievement marks a new era for local healthcare, proving that patients no longer need to travel to distant metros for world-class, complex neurosurgical care.
