Odisha Crime Branch Takes Over Investigation into Fakir Mohan College Student's Death

The Odisha Police Crime Branch has taken charge of investigating the death of a woman student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, who allegedly set herself on fire on campus. Director General of Police (CID-CB) Vinaytosh Mishra has appointed CAW&CW Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Iman Kalyan Nayak to lead the probe, assisted by Inspector Panchali Rout.

- Investigation Scope: The Crime Branch will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, examining all possible angles and revisiting earlier evidence.

- Arrests: Two individuals have already been arrested in connection with the case, but the investigation will expand to include about 20 people found directly or indirectly involved in harassing the student.

- Government Assurance: Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan has assured a free and fair investigation, warning against attempts to derail the probe.


Background:


The student, Soumyashree Bisi, a second-year integrated BEd student, died after setting herself ablaze due to alleged harassment and institutional neglect. The incident sparked widespread protests and demands for a judicial probe.
