Cuttack: The excitation of local self-governance Day turned a lacklustre affair in Cuttack today as Opposition parties like BJP and Congress boycotted the festivities organised by the BJD-led Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC).
Alleging no development, the Opposition parties staged protests at separate places in the city. The BJP corporators and activists sat on a dharna in front of the CMC office tying their mouth with black cloth and waving black flag while hundreds of Congress activists led by the senior party leader MD Moquim staged demonstration at Beleview square. The protesters were trying to demolish a plaque and police opposed move following which they had scuffle. Moquim and other activists were taken into preventive custody.
The activists alleged that no major projects have been undertaken on self governance day. Development has taken a backseat in the CMC, so there is nothing to observe this day with much fan fare, they said.
“We will intensify our agitation in coming days. Our activists will protest all inauguration and foundation stone activities today across the city,” Moquim said.
“The projects whose foundation stones were laid last year are yet to be completed. The citizens of Cuttack will not tolerate the foundation stone and plaque politics anymore,” he added.
Cuttack Barabati MLA Debasish Samantray who inaugurated a project at Belleview square said the Opposition parties are doing cheap politics to garner public support.
