Crime Branch SIT starts probe into wedding gift blast case

Bhubaneswar: A day after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik ordered a Crime Branch probe into the Patnagarh parcel bomb explosion in which a newlywed techie and his grandmother were killed last month, the Crime Branch on Friday started probe by forming a four-member SIT.

The four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was led by an Additional Superintendent of Police-rank official, informed Crime Branch ADG Santosh Kumar Upadhyay.

The CM on Thursday ordered a Crime Branch probe after Soumya Sekhar Sahoo’s wife Reemarani, who survived the blast, made an emotional appeal to the CM from the hospital bed to expedite the investigation and nab the culprits.

Earlier in the week, after being directed by Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Rajendra Prasad Shamra the CB had reviewed progress of the case and investigation process and even extended technical assistance to Bolangir district police.

As the Bolangir police did not make any headway the CM ordered Crime Branch probe.

The explosion that took place on February 23 in which groom Soumya Sekhar Sahoo and his grandmother Jemamani died when the former was unwrapping the parcel. His wife Reemarani is still undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.

She learnt about her husband’s death three days back after which she made an emotional appeal to the CM for a speedy arrest of the accused.

Soumya had entered into wedlock with Reema six days before the fateful mishap.
