Death of two female elephants sparks anthrax panic

Balasore: The death of two female elephants, suspected to be caused by anthrax, in Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary has set the alarm bells ringing among forest department officials and local residents.

However, before collecting blood samples to ascertain the death of the elephants, the forest department officials burnt them hurriedly, raising many eyebrows.

On being informed the Regional Chief Conservator of Forest (RCCF) and Kuldiha Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) rushed to the spot later on and sent the carcasses for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, sources said according to protocol of the animal resources department, there is no autopsy of animals that die from anthrax to prevent the spread of the bacteria.
