Debt-ridden farmer hangs self in Jajpur

Jajpur: Unable to bear the burden of loan, a farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at Mangarajpur in Dharmasala of Jajpur district today.

The deceased identified as Gourang Bal had reportedly borrowed Rs 72,000 from private money lenders and spent the amount on agriculture. He had grown paddy in his four acres of land. He had completed tilling activities, but lacked money to purchase fertilizer. In absence of fertilizers, paddy saplings were not grown up properly which led to his distress, his wife said.

He was under severe mental agony in apprehension of a massive crop failure, she added.

Dharmasala police reached the spot and seized the body for post-mortem. Dharmasala police station IIC took the matter to the notice of local tehsildar and agriculture officer.

Till the latest report came in, no administrative officials have reached the village and started inquiry.

Some local politicians, however, visited the bereaved family and expressed condolences. They also questioned the absence of administrative and agriculture officers.
