Bhubaneswar: After a brief lull, the customs sleuths today seized 170 gram gold worth Rs 5.5 lakh again from a passenger at Biju Patnaik international airport here. The passenger who had hidden the yellow metal in his rectum was coming from Kuala Lumpur.
The air intelligence wing of customs foiled the smuggling bid after the team suspected the passenger’s body language and scanned his belongings and body. The officials found the gold bars hidden in the rectum of the passenger. He is being interrogated.
The accused is a resident of Ramanathpuram in Tamil Nadu. He was returning from Kual Lumpur in Air Asia flight, officials said.
He had made a deal with a particular person to give him the valuable metal and get some commission in return.
In August, the Customs officials had seized gold worth Rs 10.56 lakh from two passengers at the city airport. The cylindrical gold bars weighing 340 grams were seized while being smuggled from Kuala Lumpur by two Indian origin passengers.
Similarly, seizure of gold worth Rs 31 lakh was made by the customs sleuths in June. Two passengers who had come from Bangkok and Dubai had smuggled the yellow metal.
