Labourer trapped inside pipe rescued after seven hours

Cuttack: After seven hours of herculean operation, the fire officials and ODRAF team successfully rescued a labourer named Pranakrushna Muduli, who was trapped inside the concrete pipe of a pump station here near Police Signal headquarters in the city today.

He was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital for health check up. Sources said he is feeling good after being rescued. His health condition is also in a good condition.

A fire official who was engaged in the rescue operation was also injured. He was admitted to the hospital.

Muduli, a resident of Deula Sahi was engaged in cleaning garbage in the pipe when another staff, being unaware of his presence, turned on the pump and water gushed in pushing Muduli 20 to 25 ft into the pipe.

The incident took place around 7 am today. Locals noticed the incident and informed the fire and ODRAF teams which swung into action and intensified the rescue operation. They cut the concrete pipe with the help of cutter and also dug a parallel hole, which took around six to seven hours.

As Pranakrushna was stuck inside, he was supplied with adequate oxygen and provided with glucose through pipe to sustain till the rescue operation is over.

The fire and ODRAF official tried hard to pull him out of the pipe but failed as the pipe was too narrow.

The rescue team engaged a cutter machine to cut the concrete pipe to reach the trapped labourer. The pipe was cut with spraying water to control dust to ensure smooth breathing process of Pranakrushna. A black spectacle was also given to him to protect his eyes from the dust.

A doctor team also examined his health condition from inside the pipe.
